"Just Add AI" They Said. You vs. Power BI at 2 AM.
You're nice to stakeholders, your boss, and even coworkers. But Power BI? That relationship is toxic.

Read time: 2.5 minutes
If you’ve sweetened the deal with a stakeholder and yelled at your dashboard, then you belong here!
Boss: “Let’s look into AI.”
Stakeholders: “Good idea.”
Power BI: “How do you add AI?”
You behave a certain way at the meeting and then you have your meltdown. Which of those was the real you?
5 Ways to Stop Yelling at Power BI (Without Losing Your Mind)
.1. Translate Vague Requests to Concrete Problems.
"Add AI" generally means:
Faster response time,
Decrease in manual effort,
Enhanced prediction accuracy,
Data reporting that is more precise.
Before you open Power BI, ask yourself: "What is this going to help improve?"
This one question can save hours of wasted dashboard development.
2. Establishing Strong Data Before Pursuing AI Capabilities.
Most AI requests fail for a simple reason: Your data foundation is weak.
Before you do anything with AI, take a moment to assess:
Quality of your data
Consistency of your model
Reliability of your refreshes
Definitions of your metrics
AI will only highlight your weak data structure. AI will not fix a broken data structure.
3. Shift to Conversations Based on Achievements.
Most stakeholders request features. The reality is that all they need is an achievement.
Shift your approach from: "Can you add AI to the solution?" To: "What are we trying to measure as an improvement?"
This simple shift will change everything.
4. Create a Repeatable Process for Prioritizing Requests.
When you receive a chaotic request, stop and run three tests:
Is there a clear problem?
Is there clean data to create?
Is there an automated way to address this request?
Not every request should go to a dashboard. Not every request should be completed in AI.
5. Maintain Analytical Energy.
The quickest way to get burned out is to repeatedly try to solve ambiguous problems. You must establish boundaries by:
Documenting your assumptions
Defining your scope before starting
Questioning unreasonable requests
A professional, calm demeanor is accomplished in large part by practicing brazen skepticism.
💡Key Takeaway:
Your report isn't indicative of real AI. Instead, your real AI is reflected in your facial expressions when someone says, “Could you possibly add something to that?”
