If Your Job Search Is “Taking Too Long,” You’re Probably Making This One Mistake!

If time is starting to feel like evidence that you’re “not good enough,” read this before you lower your bar.

Read time: 2.5 minutes

In January, you made a plan for your future: You would work towards a new position with a larger title and salary, and by now, you should have at least one interview/offer, but instead, you are receiving no feedback on the applications you submitted about two months ago to gain traction towards your career goal.

You begin thinking, "Did I set my career goal too high?" "Am I really at my targeted level of seniority?" "Did I miss the boat?" All of a sudden, it feels like time = proof... however, time isn't your proof, it's your misalignment to the timeline.

The Solution: TRUTH™ Framework

T - Tension:

"You're applying to many different positions, hoping to find a match. You are searching for Senior Manager, Director, Strategy Lead, and Operations Lead positions. But you will likely find one."

Fix: Focus on just ONE position for 30 days. Do not apply for positions above or below the one you are designated.

R - Reframe:

"If you do not have any interviews, it means that value is absent; but rather it indicates that you are not being given a clear message."

Fix: Change your vague job title of "Operations Leader | Strategy | Growth" to a more explicit title of "Senior Operations Manager | B2B SaaS | Process Optimization".

U - Utility:

"Your resume describes responsibilities rather than achievements."

Fix: Substitute specific responsibilities with quantifiable results from past work and state how much the change has improved the process. Example: instead of "Work cross-functionally", write "Developed new process for Sales to Operations transition, reducing onboarding by 28%".

T - Transfer:

"Each application provides a new opportunity to create your value proposition, thereby limiting underlying value as compared to money."

Fix: Use a position statement on all applications for consistency, including resume, LinkedIn, and outreach efforts; use the same position descriptor.

H - Human Proof:

"Waiting to receive an offer does not provide you with any knowledge that you have done a good job but you will not receive any feedback until after you receive the first interview."

Fix: Call three people in a similar role and ask questions that indicate how they would rate your level (e.g., "What level would you give me?").

Focusing your effort leads to success... scattered efforts lead to stagnation.

💡Key Takeaway:

The duration of your job hunt typically has little to do with your talents, but rather with how clear you are regarding your goals.

A clear focus on what you want will help you move more quickly than just hoping to get it.
