5 Brutal Truths: You Didn’t Back the Wrong Tech—You Backed the Wrong Founder for the Market
Most failures aren’t technical—they’re mismatches between founder and market.

The harsh reality is that bad companies don’t fail because of bad products, they fail because their leaders aren't aligned with their target market's needs and wants.
An investor funds an innovative leader and the technology is fast, scalable, and compelling. However, after several months of working with no revenue and only demos (and lots of potential), the investor is asking: "Where's the market to support your product?"
The disconnect between the product and the market is the problem.
Another leader created a simpler solution that solved a major, painful problem for people. The market paid for it.
One created a product... the other created a business.
How to Prevent Backing (or Becoming) the Wrong Founder.
1. Confirm the Market Before the Product:
• Make a clear Ideal Customer Profile (ICP).
• Test price early in the product’s lifecycle.
• Look for revenue clarity more than technical depth.
2. Establish That the Problem Exists
• Conduct at least 20 customer interviews.
• Look for urgent, common pain points.
• Require proof (not conjecture) of need.
3. Sell Outcomes, Not Technology:
• Support product with revenue, cost and/or risk savings.
• Develop a clear ROI story.
• Do Not Use ”AI-first” in your positioning unless you can demonstrate its value to your customer’s business.
4. Be Specific to Win Fast:
• Focus on one high-value / painful use case.
• Build to serve one specific segment of customers.
• Develop repeatable go-to-market process.
5. Generate Early Distribution:
• Get design partners/existing customers/willingly paying customers to support you.
• Validate a reasonable demand before ramping production on the product.
• Prioritize traction over perfection.
