“Can ChatGPT Write Original Code?” — The Answer Exposes More About You Than AI
The uncomfortable truth about “original code” that most developers don’t want to admit.

Read time: 2.5 minutes
A developer requests, "Can I create unique computer programs away from you?"
The response is, "Not in the way you make it fresh and new."
That may appear tongue-in-cheek, but it has its effect.
Most of the programming we produce is really just the assembly, modification, and reuse of established patterns that we are familiar with.
What Is Happening (And Why Does It Matter)
1. Most original coding was based on pattern recognition.
Remembering past solutions or all the syntax you have learned (and structures). AI will recognize patterns in the same way, but at a much higher speed.
Truth: Most creation comes from recombination.
2. Speed is no longer a differentiator.
AI code generation takes seconds, where before it took hours.
Shift: Instead of writing fast, you now must have clear thinking as opposed to speed of creation.
3. Code quality is dictated by judgment rather than typing.
The AI can develop logic, however, an AI does not have a full understanding of the context, trade-offs, or value.
Shift: Now you are focused on reviewing and validating code instead of coding.
4. The bottleneck has moved upstream.
No longer will the question be "How do I code that?”
Now it will be: "What should I build and why?"
Shift: Focus has changed from execution of code to the decision to build that code.
5. Differentiation is no longer just in the code.
All tools are equal, all code produces the same output, and all code uses the same libraries.
Truth: Differentiation is based on how the code will connect to actual outcomes.
💡Key Takeaway:
Originality isn’t gone because of AI. The value was never going to come from coding… it’ll be more about making important decisions with real-world implications.
