5 Brutal Truths: Your Model Works. The Business Doesn’t Care. (Late February Edition)

Late February is when leadership stops applauding accuracy and starts demanding outcomes.

Read time: 2.5 minutes

In the last week of February, a data science team entered an exec review meeting with good news about increased AUC, deployed a model, and delivered accurate results on their dashboard. Everyone in the room was pleased, but then the CFO asked, "Why was revenue not impacted?"

This is when the realization hit... the model was not flawed; the company's failure to integrate and implement decision design with the model's science led to no action to affect revenue. The model functioned properly, but the company did not move forward with its use or implementation.

How to create impact with your model's success? 5 changes that execs actually listen to:

1) Measure money instead of reporting accuracy.
Change AUC and replace it with financial delta, such as revenue, margin and responsible churn reduction.

2) Keep tabs on the weekly override rate.
If people are overriding the model more than they are using it, you've deployed without getting buy-in.

3) Embed the model into your decision gate.
If your model is in a dashboard, it's a recommendation. It must be part of your decision-making process.

4) Turn prediction output into actionable behavior.
You must convert your model output to: risk tier → threshold → required action (no interpretation).

5) Appoint an adoption owner.
If you don't have a business leader responsible for behavior change, there will be no mechanism to hold the model accountable.

💡Key Takeaway:

Businesses reward changes in behavior, not the model. If the model isn't connected to money, adoption, or decision gates, it is no more than another sophisticated-looking item.
