5 Brutal Truths Why Your “Single Source of Truth” Power BI Isn’t Single

What if your Power BI dashboard isn’t wrong... but everyone using it is seeing a different truth?

Read time: 2.5 minutes

30 April. Monthly reviews start on the same Power BI report with the same KPI's. There will be: 3 Teams - 3 Numbers - 0 Errors - 0 Crashes.

All you will hear is silence, followed by uncertainty… when numbers are uncertain, you will have revealed your "Single Source of Truth".

The Harsh Reality of Your Power BI "Single Source of Truth"

1. One dataset does not equal one definition.
Same data, but two different revenue versions.
Solution:
Create a common metrics layer across the different data sources.
1 KPI = 1 Definition.

2. Reports do not change user behavior.
Users will export a report, change it and distribute it to others.
Solution:
Use only verified datasets and limit the ability to export KPIs.

3. Accurate does not equal consistent.
Filters, date and granularity vary for the same report.
Solution:
Homogenize all reports using a standard date table and a consistent filtering logic.

4. Time changes the truth.
Logic that can change without anyone knowing.
Solution:
Implement version control and keep track of changes to KPIs.

5. Power BI is not the truth.
It is only a representation of the data.
Solution:
Separate the different layers of the data:
- Data
- Model
- Metrics
- Report

💡Key Takeaway:

Many interpretations of the same dashboard exist due to a lack of a single source of truth.
